How Apple, Google and Samsung Track Your Phone in Australia

Phone tracking in Australia in 2026 starts with the operating system itself. Stock Android phones (including Google Pixel and Samsung) and iPhones collect and send data in the background even when the phone sits idle and even after many people turn tracking settings off. Australian carriers still keep call and location metadata for at least two years. Settings and a VPN reduce some of it. They do not remove the operating-system layer.

Most Australians use the phone for banking, SMS, calls and everyday apps. A Privacy Phone running GrapheneOS removes the Google tracking layer while keeping those apps working. It arrives as new Australian stock, already configured for 4-7+ hours, with a 2-year Australian warranty. You keep Owner and can set limited profiles.

Quick answer

  • Stock Android (Google, Samsung and others) and iOS collect device data, location signals, app activity and telemetry even when idle.
  • Turning off tracking or analytics in Settings does not stop system services from communicating with Apple, Google or Samsung.
  • A VPN hides some traffic from your internet provider. It does not stop the operating system or an app sending data to its own company.
  • Turning off “tracking” shrinks some of this. It does not remove the layer.
  • Australian carriers (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and resellers) still see the handset on the mobile network and keep specified metadata for at least two years.
  • A Privacy Phone running GrapheneOS removes the Google layer. Most banking, SMS and call apps still work. It does not hide you from the carrier while the mobile radio is on.

What Apple, Google and Samsung collect

On a stock phone the tracking starts before you open most apps, where the operating system itself is built to report home.

Google: the phone is the product

Google’s core business is advertising. A phone that reports what you do is useful to that business.

Play Services is the layer under almost every stock Android phone outside China. Researchers at Trinity College Dublin have shown it and the Play Store store advertising cookies and device identifiers even when you have never opened a Google app. There is no consent screen and no switch that blocks those cookies.

The same research found Google’s Messages app reports when a text is sent or received (time and a shortened hash of the text). The Dialer reports call time, length and numbers. No opt-out was found.

A 2026 study of 15,456 popular Android apps found about 85% made a network connection while not on screen. More than half of those kept connecting after the app was closed or never opened. Many sent a device identifier, location or installed-app list.

An earlier Trinity College Dublin test found a stock Pixel contacting Google about every four and a half minutes while idle, including with no account signed in. Turning off Location History and Web and App Activity reduces one slice. It does not remove Play Services. Assistant, backup, push notifications and device health keep a path open. More of that stream is now also used to train AI.

Samsung: Google, plus another company

A Samsung phone runs Android then adds One UI. You get Google’s layer and Samsung’s.

Samsung Health, Bixby, SmartThings and a Samsung account each want their own view. Some pre-installed apps are carrier or partner installs, not tools you chose.

Samsung is one of the phones Australians actually buy. A recent 2026 study put Apple, Samsung and Motorola as the top three vendors in the first half of the year (3.87 million smartphones sold). Apple took 49.4%. Galaxy AI features added through 2026 often need a Samsung account or network connection.

You can refuse some extras. You cannot make a Samsung phone behave like a phone that was never built to report to two companies.

Apple: better on ads, not a private phone

Apple is the strongest of the three on other companies’ tracking. App Tracking Transparency made it harder for an app to follow you across other apps. Apple does not run an advertising business the way Google does.

That is not the same as the phone going quiet.

iCloud holds photos, messages, backups and device data. In many cases Apple can be required to hand over what it holds. Siri and Apple Intelligence send some requests off the phone. Diagnostics and “improve Siri” are opt-in on paper. Independent researchers at Mysk have reported that Apple’s own apps, including the App Store, still sent detailed usage data when analytics sharing was switched off. Apple has disputed parts of that finding. Apple’s support page says you can turn analytics off. Do that. Then assume iCloud, Find My and the App Store are still a relationship with Apple, not a private device.

What settings and a VPN do not fix

“I turned off tracking in Settings” is the most common claim. On a stock phone, system services still communicate. Diagnostics, location frameworks, advertising identifiers and account-linked features continue unless the entire operating-system layer is removed.

A VPN encrypts traffic between your phone and the VPN provider. It can hide your IP from websites you visit. It does not stop the operating system, Google, Apple, Samsung or an app from sending data to its own servers. It does not hide a SIM from the carrier.

App permissions help. Denying location, microphone or contacts to apps that do not need them reduces one stream. It doesn’t stop the phone itself from reporting home.

Australian carriers still track the handset

Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and the networks that resell them see the handset through the SIM. They see which tower you are on and keep call and message records. In a city that location is often tens of metres. In regional areas it is wider. Australian law requires them to keep specified metadata for at least two years.

GrapheneOS can’t avoid carrier metadata collection in Australia. Airplane mode or a Faraday bag is the silence. Wi-Fi and private calling apps mean less time on the towers. The SIM can still register if the mobile radio is on. See the full detail in mobile network tracking FAQ.

What a Privacy Phone changes

A Privacy Phone running GrapheneOS removes the Google tracking layer from the operating system. No Google or Apple account is required. Location and app use are not sent to Google while the phone sits in your pocket.

You get one-tap kill switches for the camera, microphone, location, sensors and network. Apps are sandboxed. You can run up to 32 profiles so banking is not in the same space as everything else. Per-app network and storage controls mean an app only sees the folders and contacts you allow.

Most everyday apps still work, including Australian banking, SMS and calls. Optional sandboxed Play is available if a specific app needs it. The phone arrives as new Australian Pixel stock (not refurbished or grey import), already configured for 4-7+ hours before it ships, with a 2-year Australian warranty and local support.

Practical steps you can take today
  1. On a stock phone, turn off location history, ad personalisation and activity tracking where the settings exist. Expect system services to continue.
  2. Review app permissions. Remove location, microphone and contacts from apps that do not need them. Delete apps you have not opened in 90 days.
  3. Use a private browser for everyday browsing instead of the default signed-in browser.
  4. Register your number on the Do Not Call Register and unsubscribe from marketing SMS and email.
  5. For the operating-system layer, move to a Privacy Phone running GrapheneOS; ready-to-use.

Final thoughts

Phone tracking in Australia in 2026 is built into stock Android and iOS. Settings and a VPN reduce some streams. They do not remove the operating system that reports home, and they do not hide you from Australian carriers while the mobile radio is on.

A Privacy Phone cuts the Google layer while keeping everyday Australian use. Use the controls that exist today. Then reduce what the device gives away at the source.
