A de-Googled phone in Australia is a Google Pixel running GrapheneOS. Google Play Services is removed from the operating system, the bootloader is relocked, and Verified Boot is on. It is not a stock Android phone with the Google apps deleted.
In 2026 more Australians are switching because stock Android still collects location and activity below the permission toggles.
Quick answer
- A genuine de-Googled phone removes Google Mobile Services from the operating system. Deleting the Google apps is not the same thing.
- Best option in Australia is GrapheneOS on a new Pixel 9 or Pixel 10, with the bootloader relocked.
- It works on Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and the networks that resell them, including eSIM, and it keeps your existing number.
- Most Australian banking apps run in an optional sandboxed Play profile. Google Pay doesn’t work.
- From 30 September 2026, certified Android phones in some countries only install apps from registered developers. A wider rollout is planned for 2027. A GrapheneOS phone is not a certified Play device, so it does not enforce that rule.
- Buy new Australian stock with a full 2-year AU warranty. Skip refurb and grey import handsets.
What is a de-Googled phone?
In Australia, a de-Googled phone (also written deGoogled or degoogled) is a smartphone whose operating system does not include Google Play Services, the Play Store, or a mandatory Google account. The hardware can still be a Pixel. The software is not stock Android.
GrapheneOS is the system we install. It keeps calls, messages, the camera and apps, and removes the part that reports home by default. Sandboxed Google Play can be added later as an ordinary app, with no system privileges, if a bank or a government app needs it. It is off unless you turn it on.

Google-free often means the visible Google apps were removed while Play Services is still running. De-Googled means Play Services is not part of the system.
A PrivacyPros phone is that stack on a new Australian Pixel, configured for 4-7+ hours before it ships. No Google or Apple account is required. We apply our standards so each phone arrives ready – no DIY, no steep learning curve, no half-finished science project.

Why the switch is happening
Most people already know their phone holds messages, photos, banking, location and work logins. What fewer realise is that on stock Android a large part of that data is still available to Google through settings most people never open.
In August 2022 the Federal Court ordered Google to pay $60 million for misleading Android users about location collection. People were shown a Location History control. Another setting, Web and App Activity, was on by default and also let Google collect location. The ACCC estimated users of about 1.3 million Google accounts in Australia may have seen a screen the Court found misleading. The control people thought was the off switch was not the only switch.
The OAIC’s 2026 survey of 1,504 adults found 93% say protecting personal information is important and 78% feel they have little or no control. 93% say using information collected for a service to train an AI system is not fair.
Main reasons for switching to de-Googled phones in Australia:
- AI training. Photos, voice and location are now inputs to commercial AI. Consent screens rarely describe that use in plain language.
- Update gaps. Many Android brands patch slowly. GrapheneOS ships rapid security updates on supported Pixels, with a patch window of up to 7 years on Pixel 8 and newer. It shipped the fix for the October 2026 “SMS of Death” bug (CVE-2026-58882) in July, months before disclosure.
- Sensors and biometrics. GrapheneOS keeps biometrics local and can deny apps camera, microphone, location and other sensors, including a system Sensors Off control.
- App tracking. Popular apps ship with third-party analytics and advertising SDKs that track you across other apps (see How Apps Track and Harvest Personal Data). Per-app network and storage scopes limit what each app can see and make cross-app profiling harder. They do not make a bad app good. They just restrict what it can access.
Turning off ad personalisation, location and Web and App Activity only reduces what a Google account stores. It does not remove Play Services. That layer sits under the permission screen and keeps reporting whether or not you open a Google app that day. An iPhone has the same shape under a different brand. Switching from Android to iPhone changes who receives the data, it doesn’t stop the collection (see How Apple, Google and Samsung Track Your Phone).

What to buy in Australia
The best de-Googled phones in Australia are current Pixels running GrapheneOS. GrapheneOS supports Pixels because they have a relockable bootloader, Verified Boot, a Titan security chip, and a modem that is isolated from the main system. Relocking the bootloader after installation is what makes Verified Boot meaningful.
Before you buy, check if it’s new Australian stock with 2-year warranty, runs GrapheneOS with a locked bootloader, arrives professionally configured, and includes a Quick Start Guide and User Manual.
Many “private phones” and “privacy devices” sold in Australia are refurbished, grey imports, or unfinished setups with no real support. The warranty is often a 12-month seller promise. Avoid those risks, as these details matter for a phone you carry every day.
Not every de-Googled phone in Australia is the same product. See FAQ: PrivacyPros vs other Privacy Phones in Australia.
We sell new Australian-model Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 phones for that reason. Until another device matches that hardware bar, an AU-model Pixel is the de-Googled phone to buy.
Banking and networks
CommBank, Westpac, NAB, ANZ and the larger online banks generally run when sandboxed Google Play is on in the profile that needs them. Sandboxed Play is a normal app. It does not get the system access it has on a certified Android phone. You can keep it out of the profile you use most.
Google Wallet and tap-to-pay through Google Pay do not work. They need Play Services at system level. A bank’s own tap-to-pay, or the physical card, covers that gap. Most government apps follow the same pattern.
Calls, texts and 4G or 5G data work on Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and the networks that resell them. You keep your number. eSIM works.
GrapheneOS and other options
De-Googled is a category. GrapheneOS is the one we ship because it keeps Verified Boot with a relocked bootloader and sandboxes Google Play so it has no system privileges. CalyxOS, LineageOS and /e/OS exist as alternatives with different trade-offs on security, hardware support and how they handle Google services. See a comparison in FAQ GrapheneOS, CalyxOS, LineageOS and /e/OS.
Why configuration matters
Installing GrapheneOS is free and legal in Australia. Most people stop at the install. The reduction depends on what happens next: profiles split between daily use and a locked-down space, network and sensor switches set per app, sandboxed Play only where a bank needs it, customisation so it does not feel like a science project, and the carrier tested on an Australian network.
DIY can take days to weeks. A PrivacyPros phone is the 4–7+ hour setup by our experts, ready on day one, and supported by our local team.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is a de-Googled phone in Australia?
A phone running an operating system without Google Play Services or a mandatory Google account. The best option is a new Pixel on GrapheneOS, bootloader relocked, working on AU networks, configured by an expert.
Are de-Googled phones legal in Australia?
Yes. GrapheneOS is open-source software. You can port your number and use any Australian carrier.
Will my bank app work?
Yes. Most major Australian banking apps work with sandboxed Google Play in the profile that needs them. Google Pay does not.
Do I need a Google account?
No. The phone sets up and runs without one. You add sandboxed Play only if a app asks for it.
What is the difference between de-Googled and Google-free?
Google-free often means the Google apps were removed while Play Services remains. De-Googled means Play Services is not part of the operating system.
How does GrapheneOS compare with CalyxOS, LineageOS and /e/OS?
GrapheneOS is the strongest option for verified boot and sandboxed Play on supported Pixels. The others make different trade-offs on hardware support and Google services. See the dedicated FAQ for the full comparison.
Who’s switching to a de-Googled phone?
Lawyers, clinicians, journalists, researchers, founders and people who simply do not want their ordinary life in an advertising profile. Parents are a growing share of the switch. A second profile can block app installs without a child’s Google account sitting under the restriction. See FAQ: How a Privacy Phone works for a child or teenager.
Final Thoughts
The reasons Australians are switching to de-Googled phones in 2026 are practical. A new Australian-stock Pixel running GrapheneOS removes Google’s tracking layer while keeping calls, banking and everyday apps working. The phone arrives configured by an expert, with a two-year Australian warranty and local support.
Good habits and careful app choices still matter, but the phone no longer reports home by default.
